THE DIARY OF A MEDICAL EDUCATOR

I finished college on 30.4.2010 with an MD in Pharmacology at the age of 30 years and 7 months, 13 years after first joining medical school. I had to take a break after 5&1/2 years of MBBS as I struggled to get a post graduation seat. There are two main streams of job opportunities after college with this degree. Join the Pharmaceutical industry or join the Education sector. I was lucky to get offers from both these sectors.

I was offered the post of a medical science manager by a global MNC, with a good pay package and a dream job involving lot of travelling and interaction with individuals, who the guys liked to call Key Opinion Leaders. I had almost joined the company, probably was just one step away, when the medical tests diagnosed me with Diabetes. This was a huge shock for me as there was no family history or symptomatology to suggest that I would be suffering from this plague of humanity. However this was not a deterrent to my ambitions in any way, it was the liver function tests which were the dampeners. All enzymes were elevated and I was diagnosed with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with a likelihood of non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH). After discussions with the medical division of the aforementioned company, I was advised to undergo further evaluation and get a certificate of medical fitness for the job.

At this stage I opted out of the opportunity and decided to take up the offer at college where I am presently working. This is my diary at the college. The everyday mundane stuff that a married assistant professor of pharmacology does, his trials and tribulations at the workplace and home and what happens when the in-laws live close by.
